This poignant and carefully researched documentary takes a stark look at the harsh realities behind the oft-romanticized view of the train-hopping Depression-era hobo. Of those habitual rail riders, 250,000 thousand were children and adolescents, many of whom were forced to hit the road not for fun and adventure, but out of brutal necessity. The filmmakers got their stories from the reminiscences of 10 former vagabonds (including a female, an African American, and one 72-year-old who continues hopping trains) and archival government and newsreel footage to create an accurate, at times wrenching, view of the wanderers's struggle to survive. The soundtrack includes period folk music from such artists as Woody Guthrie. Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide. Interview with the filmmakers, Slide show featuring Depression-era photos, Excerpt from "Riding the Rails: Teenagers on the Move During the Great Depression, Websites of interest, Scene selection.

Commonly question about Riding The Rails

Question :

Why was riding the rails in the great depression really illegal?

Hey guys and girls,
Why was riding the rails in the great depression of the 1930s so illegal? I know that around 5000 hobos died because of it.
Any other facts about riding the rails would be appreciated.
Answer :
Not only was riding the rails cheating the railway company of revenue, it was also grossly unfair to the company s employees who had to collect and dispose of mangled human remains on the track.

To this day they have the same problem in India, where people ride on the roof of trains to avoid the ticket collector, and occasionally get wiped off by low bridges. I have also seen film clips of youths train-surfing for sport in S. America. All these people risk giving some poor railwayman a most unpleasant and unavoidable job.
