Question :

How should I play decent hands in texas Holdem poker?

I ve been playing poker with colleagues and family for a few years, but I m looking to take a vacation out to Vegas and actually play texas Holdem for money! I feel like I m a pretty average player right now, but I was wondering if anyone has any tips about Preflop strategy, because I usually just call with good hands an fold everything else? Am I doing something wrong?
Answer :
So you never raise pre-flop? You only call or fold? Why do you feel like you are an average player?
Question :

Tips for playing poker when there are two people?

Basically, when there are only two people playing texas holdem, (me against another person) what are some things I can do to beat him?
Three dfiferent scenarios:
1. I have more money than him, i.e. he has the short stack.
2. I have the short stack.
3. We are about even.
Also, I m talking about tournaments where the blinds keep going up, which means that the guy with the short stack keep feeling the pressure, and the guy with more money tries to scare off the littler guy as quick as possible, etc...
I can do pretty well when there are more than two people, but I just don t know how to go up against another person one on one in poker...
Answer :
Ok, You have 3 scenarios.. This is my personal advice so you may take it lightly, you may not.. Anything we say on this site pales in comparison to Pro-tips.. I advise buying a book or purchasing a DVD (if your that serious) to improve your game. Doyle Brunson s Books are amazing.

ok so....

scenario 1.Always play aggressive. He knows you are going to bully him because of his limited amount of chips. So take this into consideration. You may play aggressive and pick up his blinds a few times.. But then.. when you discover a huge hand ie.. AA, Ak, Aj, Kq, a pocket pair etc.. hands are classified into A B and C strengths. C is normally A10, Aj and small pairs. In this situation all C hands become incredibly strong heads up. anyways back to the heads up play. When you discover a huge hand you might check or limp in. Oftentimes they see this as a weakness or they might know your plan.. What i do is simply check it all the way down until they dig their own grave or i must bet fifth street to salvage some amount of chips. But aggressiveness is always key when you have a greater amount of chips.

Scenario 2. Ok so what do you know?: You know you need a decent hand to go all-in. You also know he is going to play aggressive. You also know that your opponent is aware that you most likely are going to wait-out for a big hand.. and then simply he folds when you aquire such hole cards. In this situation I play counter-aggressively. As you do not want to lose your chips obviously... However in the same Token he does not want "Double you up" and solidify your position back in this heads-up play. So I am often aggressive to "catch them off guard". Same rules apply with the big hand.. limp in or check and let your opponents own aggressiveness lay out their defeat.

scenario 3. This comes down to playing the right cards and protecting the fact that you are even in chips. You do not want your opponent to take a lead so you must play below-average cards. I like to play hands where i have the dealer button. This is simply because i like to have the decision to check or bet after a check by the opponent(which often signifies weakness). However if you are check-raised you must cut your losses.. unless you can determine if your opponent is simply bluffing. With high blinds you must play to protect yourself. Heads is based a lot upon how the cards fall.

You must disregard your opponents tendencies when heads up and either you are short stack or chip leader. Cause aggressiveness paves the way to victory. However, when you have an even amount of chips you may take this into consideration. were they aggressive? were they a tight player? etc. Pot odds and other things must be considered as well. iv written a long description that vaguely explains heads-up.

If you have any questions message me. Id be more than happy to help with more specific situations. Good Luck
Question :

Texas Holdem Tips Please?

Hello all!

I am going to Vegas in a few days, and I want to play a couple games of holdem while I m there, but I have some questions first, and hopefully someone here can help me. I have been playing holdem for over a year, but I have only played with friends on "poker night". I have never played in a casino atmosphere with a table full of strangers.

1. What does "sit and go" mean? Does that mean "cash game", where you get the exact amount of chips you buy in for, and you can quit whenever you want?

2. About how long does a tournament game last?

3. Is it better for a person like me to play in tournaments, or should I look for "cash games"? (or whatever they call them)

4. When playing poker, you are playing against the other players ONLY right? There is no house advantage when playing poker at the casino, right?

5. What is a good website to learn more about "position", and if you are in a good or bad one?

Thanks in advance for you help!
Answer :
I have some answers for you!

1. A sit-n-go is a tournament, usually with a small number of entrants (generally from 6-18, but they can get bigger) that starts as soon as the maximum number of entrants have been seated, rather than at a scheduled time like most tournaments. So basically, once everyone has "sat" down, you "go." It s not a cash game, it s a tournament.

2. This depends mainly on two things: how many entrants and what the limits are. As a general rule, the more entrants, the longer it lasts. Also, limit games tend to last longer than no limit games, since you can t put all your money into one hand in limit games. On average, though, I d say a decent tournament will deprive you of about 2 hours of your lifespan (adjust accordingly for number of entrants and limit/no limit), but I ve sat down for up to 5 hours before.

3. Tournaments. Two reasons: One, it will cost you less to see more hands. In cash games, you pay out of your own pocket for each round. A few bad hands and your pockets are empty. In tournaments, everyone starts out even, so even if you play super tight the whole time, you ll most likely get to see more hands. Two, you pay a certain amount, and that s it. This is a nice gambling addict inhibitor. Once you re out, you can t throw more money in and go back in, so it helps to curb your spending. Plus, I just think tournaments are more fun (though less potentially profitable).

4. Basically correct. The house wins every time because of what s called a "rake." A rake is simply a percentage the house takes from each pot to compensate for its accomodations. Again, this is more costly in a cash game, where the house is taking in anywhere from 5-10% on EACH hand, whereas in a tournament, they take a one time "rake" on the buy-in (also about 10%), rather than a rake for each hand.

5. There are so many I wouldn t know where to begin. Here are a few:

There are probably dozens of other sites that can help you with strategy. If this is too much, or if these sites aren t helping, just do a google search for "texas hold em position" and you ll find plenty, or ask around here if you have specific questions. There are at least half a dozen other players who are very knowledgeable and helpful.

Good luck at the tables! Going to Vegas, I envy you.

You mentioned adding other tips. So, in case you don t know:

- Play tight, but when you play, be aggressive. If nothing else, playing tight (only playing the best hands, Like AA-JJ, high suited connectors... on occasion medium pairs like 88-TT or gapped suiters (AQ, KJ) or unsuited connectors (KQ, QJ)) will allow you to see more hands and get a better feel for the game and for your opponents. Playing tight means you re playing no more than 1 in 4 hands (the less the better). More important than playing tight, though, is playing aggressive (I like even playing semi-loose at tournies, playing roughly 30% of the hands). If you let your opponents see the next card, their ugly medium pair may just turn into trips, two pair or even a straight. So if you have it (or even if you don t, sometimes!), try to push people off as much as possible. Attack!

2. When facing just one or two opponents, especially when you are the last to act and everyone is checking, try the occasional bluff. The tighter you play the more this works. As a tight player, when you bet, you have the image (called your "table image") that you only act when you have a good hand and - especially when your opponents are weak (calling and folding more often than betting) and the pot isn t very huge, this will work really well for you at times. Don t push it though. I rarely rarely bluff when in early position and/or when there are more than 2 other callers. Semi-bluffing is also great (when, at the moment, you have nothing, but it could turn into something huge). In these moments, again the fewer the players and the weaker they are the better it works. But this can work in even middle positions because a) you could get something huge, and your semi-bluff just made the pot bigger, b) it ll give you a read on your opponents hands (if they bet back at you, they probably already have something, or have a bigger draw than you, if call, they might also be on a draw, or are holding a pair).

3. Probably most important, TAKE MENTAL NOTES ON YOUR OPPONENTS. This can be hard to do if there are a lot of them, so the most important things to keep track of are:
- Are they tight or loose? Passive or aggressive? Tight opponents will fold up easily, these are the guys you want to bluff against if they re checking or fold to if they are betting or be wary of if they are calling. Loose players rarely fold, these are the players you do NOT want to bluff against (but maybe semi bluff) but you want to attack if you are holding a strong hand. Aggressive players are ones you want to spring traps on, loose players just the opposite, play it by the book.
- How often do they fold? At what point? Are they willing to go down to the river? Do they just like to see the flop?
- How often have they bluffed and with what kind of hands and in what position?
- What hands do they bet/call/fold with? Will they push with semi-bluffs or just overcards? With top pair? Will they slowplay or check/raise or check/call? Do they like pocket pairs? If so, which ones? (some players think all pocket pairs are gold).
This has been the biggest one for me. Taking notes on my opponents usually tells me in about 15-20 minutes how to play them, especially at tournies where you probably won t be switching tables.

- On that note, switch up your strategy once in awhile. Keep your opponents guessing. Stick with a strategy you like about 80-90% of the time, but try something different every so often, especially against just one opponent. If you don t like bluffing, try bluffing every so often, or vice versa. Almost as important as reading your opponents is not allowing them to read you.

Sorry that was so long!
